Nestled at the northern tip of the Adriatic Sea, the Istria region of Croatia is a captivating destination right in the heart of Europe. While planning luxury travel to Croatia, travelers often overlook Istria in favor of better-known locales like Dubrovnik or Split—which means this gorgeous, laid-back peninsula is still a true hidden gem.

Known for its fabulous cuisine, family-run wineries, ancient Roman ruins, and slower pace, Istria is truly idyllic. After exploring the peninsula myself on a recent trip, I highly recommend this picturesque destination.

Where Is Istria in Croatia? Explore This Stunning Heart-Shaped Peninsula in the Adriatic Sea

Many people are unfamiliar with this magical region and ask: where is Istria in Croatia? Just across the Adriatic from Venice, the Istria peninsula spans more than 1,200 square miles of gently rolling hills, rocky cliffs, lush olive groves, tidy vineyards, and dramatic coastlines. Though part of Istria extends into Italy and Slovenia, the majority is in Croatia.

Travel Tip: Do not be surprised if you hear several different languages in Istria. Residents mainly speak a regional dialect of Croatian, but you may also pick up a bit of Italian, Slovenian, and German.

Luxury Travel to Croatia: Impeccable Wine and Stunning Vistas Await

Istria’s nutrient-rich soil and abundant sunshine makes it the perfect place to grow grapes. Whether you consider yourself an expert or more of a casual wine drinker, visiting one of Istria’s wineries is a must-do for any luxury travel to Croatia itinerary. At Tomaz Winery in central Istria, for instance, you can enjoy incredible views of the sun-kissed vineyards and surrounding countryside while sipping local white malvazija and red teran wines in an elegantsetting.

Immerse Yourself in Istria’s Culinary Traditions With Truffle Hunting and Tasting

Savory and brimming with flavor, truffles are also abundant in Istria. But, beyond simply tasting these rare mushrooms, you can fully immerse yourself in this important culinary tradition by embarking on a truffle-hunting tour—like the one offered by Karlić Tartufi. Search for white and black truffles in the Motovun forest with specially trained dogs, then sample these precious morsels during an educational tasting.

Travel Tip: Pack a jacket, even if you are planning a trip luxury travel to Croatia during the summer months. Istria—and other parts of the Mediterranean—can experience strong, unpredictable breezes known as “the bura.”
